We are already over one week into October, and Halloween 2019 is fast approaching! Soon, fun costume ideas and scary yummy treats will fill your Pinterest boards while you delve into the spirit of this delightfully eerie time of year. One of the easiest and fastest desserts I have made in quite some time, these spiderweb rice krispie treats are perfect for kids and adults alike!
Notes:
- While you have the option to make just the spiderweb and be done with your rice krispie treats, the spider and the spider’s victim add a very cute and simple element that completes this adorable little treat. If you have the time, I highly recommend these charming little toppers for your krispie treats!
- You do not have to put the pretzel pieces into the rice krispie treats, but I do recommend them because the salt and savory pretzel flavor temper the sweetness of these creepy, sweet treats.
- Tip: If you would like your spider to look less cute and more scary, purchase some of the red eyeball sprinkles that you can find at stores, like Joann, this time of year.
Make and Cut the Rice Krispie Treats
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spray the paper with non-stick cooking spray. Using either a food processor or a Ziplock bag and a rolling pin, chop some mini pretzels or pretzel sticks. Do not chop the pretzels too much as you want small pieces, not a powder. Prepare the rice krispie treats as directed on the package; however, add the pretzel pieces when you add the cereal. Once thoroughly mixed, spread the mixture onto the parchment paper lined baking sheet. Let the rice krispie treat completely cool and then use a circle cookie or fondant cutter (approximately 2.5 – 2.75 inches in diameter) to cut the rice crispy treats.
Make the Spiderweb
Add one cup of the black candy melts in a microwave safe bowl, and heat in the microwave in short increments, approximately 15-30 seconds at a time. Make sure to stir the candy melts in between each heating increment. Add one tablespoon of vegetable oil to thin the melting candy. Next, add a half cup of the white candy melts in a separate microwave safe bowl, and heat in the microwave in short increments, approximately 15-30 seconds at a time. Once again, make sure to stir the candy melts in between each heating increment. Add a half tablespoon of vegetable oil to thin the melting candy.
Take your rice krispie circles and dip the top side in the black candy melts to ensure that the top is fully coated in a layer of black. If there are any spots that are missing black, simply add a small amount of the candy melts and use the back of a spoon to make it smooth. Immediately add the white candy melts to a piping bag. Cut only the very tip of the piping bag off to ensure that you will be piping thin lines of white candy melts. If the candy melts do not come out in a thin, consistent flow, cut a little more of the tip off the piping bag. Pipe 3-4 circles onto the black candy melt layer.
Using the handle end of a spoon, or a paring knife, place the tip of the handle in the center of the smallest white circle and gently drag toward the edge. Wipe the candy melts off the handle and repeat this process approximately 11 more times around the rice krispie treat.
Make the Spider’s Victim
To make the body of the spider’s victim, place Rolos onto a piece of parchment paper. Add some chocolate candy melts to a microwave safe bowl and place in the microwave. Heat in 15-30 second increments – stirring in between each increment – until the candy melts are completely melted. Dip the back side of the small eyeball sprinkles in the chocolate and place on one side of the top of a Rolo. Do the same with a second eyeball sprinkle and repeat until the rest of the Rolos have a pair of eyes.
Using the melted white candy melts, pipe many white lines above and below the eyes. Once the white candy melts harden, add a small amount of the chocolate candy melts to the spiderweb rice krispie treat and place the Rolo on top. The spider’s victim spiderweb treats are complete!
Make the Spider
To make the body of the spider, add the eyeballs to the Rolos as detailed above in the “Make the Spider’s Victim” section. Once the eyes are set, add a small amount of the chocolate candy melts to the spiderweb rice krispie treat and place the Rolo on top. Add some of the melted chocolate candy melts to a piping bag and create the spider’s legs by piping a shape like the tip of an arrow. Pipe at least 8 for each spider you are making, plus extra in case any legs break during the assembly.
Once the chocolate legs are hardened, gently glide an offset spatula under the legs to release them from the parchment paper. Using either your fingertips, or a pair of food tweezers (highly recommended), dip both ends of the spider leg into the chocolate candy melts. Place the spider leg onto the treat so that one part of the leg is attached to the rice krispie treat and the other side of the leg will be attached to the Rolo. Repeat until each spider has 8 total legs, with 4 legs evenly spaced on each side of the spider. Once the candy melts harden, these delightful and tasty rice krispie treats are ready to enjoy!
