Bubbling Cauldron Cake Pops

September is flying by! It is hard to believe that we have less than a week before we are into October 2019, but that makes me even more excited to create more Halloween themed treats and appetizers while listening to spooky music or watching a scary movies!

These adorable bubbling cauldron cake pops will not only be a great addition to the dessert table at your Halloween party, but they are also quite easy to make!

Mix Cake Pop Dough

Crumble the cake, approximately 4 cups, into a large mixing bowl. Add buttercream, ¾ cup, to the mixing bowl and mix until well combined. Add more buttercream as needed until the mixture can be formed into your desired shape with your hands and be able to keep its shape. Make sure not to add too much buttercream because that will make the mixture too soft, will be harder to shape, and will not stay on the popsicle stick as well.

Scoop and Shape Cake Pop

Use a medium scoop to scoop out large balls from the cake pop mixture. Gently roll the cake pop in your hands to form a smooth ball. Place a popsicle stick into each of the cake balls. Place the cake pops in the refrigerator (NOT the freezer) for approximately 30 minutes – 1 hour. Note: Do not dip the popsicle stick in candy melts before placing it into the cake ball as we want to easily remove the stick after the cake pops are covered in the candy melts.

Make Chocolate Covered Pretzels

Add one cup of the chocolate candy melts in a microwave safe bowl, and heat in the microwave in short increments, approximately 15-30 seconds at a time. Do not burn the candy melts because you will have to start over. Add one tablespoon of vegetable oil to thin the melting candy. Note: You want the candy to just run smoothly off of a spoon, so you may have to adjust the ratio of oil to candy melts; however, I have found that a 1 cup candy melt to 1 tablespoon vegetable oil ratio is perfect for coating cake pops and pretzels.

Next, take your pretzel sticks and break off ¼ to 1/3 of the pretzel stick. Set the smaller piece aside for a different project because you will only need the longer piece. Using either food tweezers (recommended) or a fork, dip the pretzel into the candy melts. Make sure to fully coat the pretzel before shaking off excess chocolate and placing it on a piece of parchment paper. Repeat with the rest of the pretzel sticks. Leave them on the parchment paper until the chocolate solidifies, approximately 5-10 minutes.

Cover the Cake Pops

Add one cup of the black candy melts in a microwave safe bowl, and heat in the microwave in short increments, approximately 15-30 seconds at a time. As a reminder, do not burn the candy melts because you will have to start over. Once they candy melts are fully melted, add one tablespoon of vegetable oil to thin the melting candy. Take one cake pop and dip it into the candy melts. Place the cake pop onto the parchment paper, as shown in the picture above. After the melting candy hardens, approximately 1-2 minutes, remove the sticks from the cake pops and gently press on the bottom to make them flat. Lightly dip the bottom in candy melts and place on the parchment paper to create a flat bottom for the cauldron.

Finish and Decorate Cake Pops

Cut a small amount of the center out of the cake pop and gently put one of the chocolate covered pretzels into the cake pop.

Add one cup of the green candy melts in a microwave safe bowl, and heat in the microwave in short increments, approximately 15-30 seconds at a time. Once the candy melts are fully melted, do not add vegetable oil as you want the green candy melts to be thick. Using either a spoon or piping bag, fill in the center of the cake pop using some of the green candy melts. Immediately add a few sprinkles on top and into the green candy melts. Note: Once you pipe the green candy melts, add the sprinkles right away because the candy melts will harden very quickly.
