Every year my family and I participate in the Color Run in Sacramento, CA. If you have not heard of or participated in the Color Run, look them up because it is seriously so much fun! If you do not or cannot run, they literally say in their sign-ups that you can walk, run, or even crawl. This was the eighth year my mom and my sister participated while it was my seventh year because I was out of town for work one year. Our team members have varied year-to-year, but this year we were accompanied by my sister’s fiancé, two of his nieces, and one of his nephews. It is so much fun for all ages, and one of the best incentives for finishing the race are the color throws. Color throws are when you make your way to the stage where techno and pop songs blast through the speakers, and every 15 minutes or so, everyone by the stage rips open the color packets they receive at the finish line and throw them in the air all at once. All you can see is a multi-colored cloud around the stage. If you didn’t have enough color before, you certainly do after a color throw!
Starting the day off with a 5K at 8am in the morning means that by the end of all that walking, you are super hungry. The dilemma is that you are covered in color, so many places probably would not prefer to seat people that looked like they got into some kind of color war. Enter Suzie Burger. Every year, the staff gladly welcomes us and asks how the Color Run was. Suzie Burger, located at 2820 P St., is a cool, little spot to grab some great food. Offering burgers, sandwiches, fries, and shakes, this place is perfect to reward you after making it to the finish line of the 5K. Because we go so early, I usually opt to get breakfast items, but I definitely want to go back to try their burgers.
Breakfast Sandwich:
One item that I like to get is a breakfast sandwich. With four different meat options, a vegetarian option, and unlimited free toppings, there are so many ways to customize your breakfast sandwich. Also, these sandwiches are a fantastic size that makes them filling for a nice price of $5.95 ($4.95 for the vegetarian option). A toasted philly roll, egg, meat, cheese, and, finally, the herb mayo. Oh, that herb mayo. I do not get excited about mayonnaise because it does not have much flavor, nor do I use mayo as a condiment for fries. I strictly use just a little on sandwiches. I would gladly dip fries in Suzie Burger’s herb mayo! It takes the sandwich to a whole other level and it totally makes the sandwich for me. With what I believe is dill and mustard seed in the mayo, these flavors add some freshness and brighten up your pallet and keep you coming back for more and more bites. I could put that herb mayo on just about everything.
Disco Tots:
My favorite item has to be the Disco Tots: a bed of tater tots topped with gravy, a fried egg, shredded cheese, green onions, and finished with crispy pieces of bacon. This is honestly the most perfect loaded tater tot item that I have ever had! Why are these tots so awesome? Here’s the breakdown:
- Tater tots: Tater tots are delicious! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Need I say more?
- Gravy: One of my absolute favorite things to add to breakfast plates is a delicious gravy. So, adding gravy as a sauce to tater tots is a big yes from me!
- Shredded cheese: Mixed shredded cheese adds a great flavor as well as a little gooeyness as it melts.
- Fried egg: Fried eggs are a fantastic add to just about any savory dish because they add protein, but it more importantly adds that velvety, smooth sauce of the runny egg yolk.
- Green onions: The green onion adds that strong pop of freshness that provides some relief from the decadent deliciousness and keeps you coming back for more.
- Lastly, but certainly not least: the bacon. Bacon is yet another item that automatically upgrades your meal. The crispy pieces of decadent, fatty bacon adds both a needed crunchy texture as well as an obvious flavor bomb.
My one small critique would be that the gravy could use a little fresh crack of black pepper because I always feel that a good southern-style breakfast gravy should have black pepper. But come on — you have creamy gravy, a beautifully fried egg, melty cheese, a little bite of green onion, and crispy bacon pieces all on top of lightly crispy pillows of potato. It is probably a good thing that I do not live TOO close to Suzie Burger because I would get these all the time if I did. I have not tried it yet, but if you add a little drizzle of that delicious herb mayo onto the disco tots . . . my mouth is drooling just thinking about that combination!
Milkshakes:
Lastly, I cannot talk about a place without mentioning some type of dessert. Their milkshakes are very good! They have classic staples like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, along with mint chip, Nutella, peanut butter cup, and their flavor of the month. They even let you combine flavors to create unique combinations! My sister asked them to make a chocolate and peanut butter milkshake, while I asked them to mix chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry (Neapolitan). The chocolate is Ghirardelli and the strawberry has actual chunks of strawberry!. You can never go wrong with adding a shake to a meal to create the classic diner trifecta: burger, fries, and a shake!
