Ingredients:

  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • 1 1/2 – 2 tablespoons pesto
  • 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Here’s a nice pesto option:

Equipment:

  • Parchment paper
  • Heart-shaped template, such as a heart plate (optional)
  • Paring knife
  • Measuring spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Baking sheet tray

My favorite knife set because they both work well and look so cool!:

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C). Place a sheet of pre-made puff pastry on a piece of parchment paper and roll it out a little to make it slightly bigger. Cut a heart shape in the pastry dough. Do the same thing with a second piece of puff pastry and then set it aside.
  2. Now, spread pesto across the entire surface on the first layer of puff pastry. Next, sprinkle shredded Parmesan cheese onto the whole layer of pesto. Then, lay the second piece of puff pastry on top, making sure to line it up with the bottom puff pastry layer.
  3. Using a paring knife, cut strips in the heart. Start in the middle and work your way around the sides. Make a cut starting approximately 1 inch away from the center and cut all the way to the side of the heart. Make another cut approximately ½ inch to 1 inch away from the other cut and continue this around the entire heart.*
  4. Now, take one of the sections of cut puff pastry and twist it either 2 or 4 times. Repeat with the rest of the heart.**
  5. Next, add a large egg to a small bowl and mix the yolk and the white together. Use either a pastry brush or a silicone brush to brush the egg wash onto the entire surface of the puff pastry heart. Then add a generous sprinkle shredded Parmesan cheese to cover the top of the puff pastry.
  6. Bake at 400°F (204°C) for approximately 30-35 minutes, or until nice and golden brown. Let it slightly cool, rip off one of the twists, and then enjoy!

Notes:

  • *It does not have to be super precise, but try to keep the strips similar in size so that they will bake more evenly. The key thing to remember is to not cut too close to the center because you want to keep everything connected.
  • **Twist the sections of puff pastry on the left side of the heart in the opposite direction as the right side. This is because it will be symmetrical to the right side and keep the shape of the heart.
