Happy apple season! One of my favorite things about Fall is making delicious desserts with apples! There are so many yummy items you can make with apples, which is why I am posting a new apple related post everyday this week! For the first recipe of Apple Week, I made an apple compote.
Apple compote is a great way to incorporate fresh apple into your desserts! I love to use it as part of a filling for cakes, cupcakes, or macarons. To make caramel apple desserts with this compote, I cook it less so that the apples provide a crunchy texture like when you eat a real caramel apple. To make caramel apple pie desserts with this compote, I add the cinnamon and cook the apples all the way through. Give this apple compote a try for some of your next apple desserts!

minutesIngredients
1/4 cup (60 milliliters) water
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons (30 millilters) water
2 cups (approx. 250 grams) brunoised or diced apples
Directions
- Whisk the 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon (if using it), and the 1/4 cup of water in a medium-sized saucepan. Place the pan on stove on medium-high heat and bring to a boil.
- While the mixture on the stove is brought to a boil, mix together the remaining granulated sugar, cornstarch, and water. Stir this mixture into the saucepan on the stove and continue to whisk the mixture until it thickens and looks like a gel.
- Reduce to a medium-low heat and stir in the apples. Cook for approximately 10-15 minutes while stirring frequently.
- Remove from heat and either serve it warm or place in an air-tight container (with the lid off) to let the compote cool for approximately 20-30 minutes, cover, and then place in the refrigerator.
Notes
- To make an apple pie compote, add the cinnamon.
- To make an apple compote with crunchy apples, cook the apples for only 5-8 minutes instead of 10-15 minutes.
