A Little Smokiness & Some Nice Spice: How to Make Incredible Chipotle Black Bean Burgers

While I definitely enjoy dishes with meat, I also like to experiment with plant-based recipes. When I find a recipe that I really enjoy, I am excited to incorporate it into my eating habits. Some of my favorite non-meat items to make are variations of black bean burgers! I decided to make some of these yummy burgers with chipotle peppers because they provide great spice and a lovely smokiness.

NOTE: This recipe does contain egg and cheese, but I am sure that with a couple of simple substitutions, this recipe could easily become vegan.

These black bean burgers are also very versatile because you can add a little more chipotle and adobo puree to increase the spice level, or even reduce the puree if you want very little spice.

Make sure to check out my other black bean burger recipes as well! Both my BBQ Black Bean Burgers and my Pesto Parmesan Black Bean Burgers are super yummy!

TIP: Adding an egg, especially a fried egg, to black bean burgers takes them to a whole other level of yum! There is something about an egg, regardless of how it is cooked, that pairs so well with a black bean burger. Give it a try! I promise it will not disappoint!

I make a video about how to make these delicious black bean burgers for my YouTube channel! You check out the video right here:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder with parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • ¾ cup sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3 tablespoons blended chipotle & adobo
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tablespoon fresh lime juice

Equipment:

  • Baking sheet tray
  • Aluminum foil (or parchment paper)
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Potato masher
  • Large spoon or spatula
  • Spatula

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and spread the black beans in one even layer onto a baking sheet lined with either parchment paper or aluminum foil. If using aluminum foil, spray with non-stick cooking spray. Bake the beans for approximately 12-15 minutes.
  2. Turn oven up to 400°F. Remove the beans from the baking sheet and place them into a large mixing bowl. Use a potato masher or large fork to break down the beans, making sure to leave some larger pieces of black bean still intact. Add the onion powder, garlic powder with parsley, dried parsley, chili powder, smoked paprika, ground black pepper, salt, minced garlic, eggs, breadcrumbs, sharp cheddar cheese, blended chipotles and adobo, Worcestershire sauce, and fresh lime juice. Mix until everything is just combined.
  3. Use a half cup to measure out the mixture and shape them into burger patties.* If you have a little of the mixture left over, shape it into a burger and bake with the other burgers. Place the burgers on a baking sheet (I like to use the same one I used to bake the black beans), put the tray in the oven, and bake the burgers for approximately 10-12 minutes on each side, for a total of 20-24 minutes.
  4. Serve the burgers with your favorite burger buns and toppings. Enjoy!
